What Are the Cultural Shapers for Boomers?
Being a Boomer has had its moments of excitement – the emergence of feminism, ‘drugs, sex and rock & roll’ in the 60—70’s, television & TV dinners etc. But there were also global challenges – the end of World War II, the Vietnam War and the Cold War. The economy changed as well – moving to an employers market for labor – great for employers and tough for employees. One of the most important aspects for this generation is that there were twice more people than jobs. So when I explain that key part to Generation X & Y’s – they start to understand. Boomers did not just decide “Hey I think I want to work a 60 hour work week” – a large part of it was survival. Boomers learned that they needed to work extremely hard to get and keep jobs – it was highly competitive! |
